Dorsiflexion is the movement of the foot upward towards the shin. It is the opposite of plantar flexion, a downward foot movement. Dorsiflexion is essential for activities such as walking, running, and jumping. It also helps to keep balance and posture. Dorsiflexion of Foot
The muscles that control dorsiflexion are the extensor hallucis longus, the tibialis anterior, and the extensor digitorum longus. These muscles are located in the anterior compartment of the leg.
Dorsiflexion can be limited by tight or weak muscles or by injury to the ankle joint. When you are experiencing pain or limited range of motion in your ankle, seeing a doctor or physical therapist is essential.
Here are Some Exercises That Can Help to Improve Dorsiflexion:
- Toe raises: Stand on your feet shoulder-width apart, and your toes pointed. Raise your toes towards the ceiling, keeping your heels on the ground. Hold for a few seconds, then lower your toes.
- Calf raises: Stand on your feet shoulder-width apart and your heels on the ground. Raise onto your toes, keeping your heels off the ground. Hold for a few seconds, then lower back down.
- Ankle circles: Sit or stand with your ankle flexed so that your toes are pointing down. Slowly circle your ankle clockwise, then counterclockwise. Repeat ten times in each direction.
If you have pain or discomfort while doing these exercises, stop immediately and refer a doctor or physical therapist.
